Doctor of Animal Naturopathy
As a certified veterinary naturopath, I ascribe to the philosophy that all living things are self-organizing, self-healing, self-maintaining and self-transcending. I also believe that illness in our canine companions is something that ultimately can be prevented by doing things in everyday life that promote optimum health. I maintain that the natural world provides the best options for promoting whole health and for supporting the body to heal itself during those times when "dis-ease" is present in an animal. Simply put: I'm not a veterinarian, I'm a teacher. I don't heal disease, but rather I offer information that can help owners make educated health decisions for their own pets. To be sure, the dogs under my care benefit exponentially from my naturopathic approach to wellness, which also includes specialized training in aromatherapy, behavioral approaches and energy healing. I write and lecture extensively about the natural alternatives available to dog owners. My programs include a wide variety of topics and have been hosted by public libraries, adult learning groups, rescue groups, kennel clubs, training centers and been provided as entertainment for private home gatherings. My knowledge in the field and experience with my own dogs has also inspired me to create my own line of animal health products.
Show Dog Enthusiast
My love and life with show dogs began when I was 9 years old. As a youngster, I bred and exhibited many beautiful family-bred Lhasa Apsos under my mother's kennel name Tra-Mar. In 1983, I was Best Junior Handler at Westminster Kennel Club with one of our Lhasas, and one year later I won the World Championship (as the first American) at Crufts with a lovely Lhasa, Ch. Orlane's Intrepid (bred by Joan Kendall) that I had borrowed from the dearly departed Jean Blythe of the famed Hackensack kennels in the UK. During those years I enjoyed much success with the Lhasas in conformation. BIS Ch. Tra-Mar's For Your Eyes Only and BISS Ch. Tra-Mar's The Terminator were two endearing top-winning dogs from my mom's breeding program. Now, under my own kennel name Infinidad, I am proudly owned and hopelessly manipulated by a group of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. I have a reverence for whole colors (Ruby and Black & Tan), but have conditioned and successfully finished dogs in conformation for myself and others in all four colors. I am ceaselessly amazed by the versatility of this hardy toy breed. I have done pet therapy through Pet Partners and TDI as well as trained for Agility and Rally Obedience competition. To be sure, my experiences as a former CGC evaluator and licensed AKC judge bring an added dimension of appreciation to my work and enthusiasm for pure breed dogs. In 2013, I had the honor and tremendous privilege to own and show the top winning Cavalier in the CKCSC, USA. Currently, I am a proud to be an AKC Breeder of Merit as well as a member of the prestigious Ladies Dog Club.
Author
I have written many articles for dog related publications such as the AKC Gazette, Dogs in Review, The CKCS Bulletin and The Royal Dispatch. My work has also appeared in the scholarly Journal "Reflections" California State University School of Social Work, and I wrote a newspaper column that regularly appeared the Sun Chronicle and Federal Hill Gazette for several years. My writing has received multiple award recognition from the Dog Writer's Association of America and the Alliance of Purebred Dog Writers. In 2010, one of my newspaper columns was nominated for the AKC Responsible Dog Ownership Award. In 2012, my newspaper column received the coveted DWAA Maxwell award. In 2015, my article "How My Cavalier Went Viral" published in the Royal Dispatch marked my second, and most heartfelt Maxwell award because the article was so deeply personal.
